There’re many models to select from in Brother’s range of all-in-one printers and Brother MFC-J430w belongs to the cheapest options. It offers a wealth of features such as on-board Wi-Fi, a handy ADF, etc. Averagely, this all-in-one printer is priced at 90 pounds sterling.
Design
This machine offers printing, copying, faxing, and scanning features. Like other Brother’s MFPs, this one comes with a short & squat design and has rounded edges to soften its look. Brother’s higher-end models come with glossy finishes. However, it sports a cheaper matte appearance.
Then, it is equipped with a smaller 4.9-cm screen. It lacks a memory card reader/host USB port but the display is not going to be used for choosing photos to print. Therefore, its smaller size is not a problem.
The control panel is laid out neatly with large buttons for choosing the copying, scanning & faxing features. It is easy to find your way around the menus.
The slot-in, cassette-style paper tray located at the bottom holds up to 100sheets of A4 paper. There is no separate photo paper compartment so that you must remove these sheets when you’d like to print photos.
Scanning & Copying
Brother MFC-J430w comes with a handy ADF above its scanner, allowing you to scan/fax multipage documents without requiring laying each sheet on the glass surface of the scanner manually.
Scanning quality is not bad for a model in its price range. However, photocopies look too light. Besides that, copying speed is not good where it takes around 18 seconds to produce a single-page copy.
Speed, Quality & Cost
This machine is fast enough at printing. It delivers 10 pages of graphics in 2 minutes & 2 seconds. This speed is comparable and slightly faster compared to similarly priced models.
Print quality is average. Black text does not look neat. Text is dark on the page. However, there is some feathering around letters where ink splatters slightly during the process of printing.
Presentation & graphics are printed cleanly. However, colors lack intensity & the same is true of photos. When printed on glossy paper, snaps have good levels of detail. However, color looks a touch washed out than other sub-£100 models.
In relation to costs, a black-n-white page costs 3.2p to print. A color page will set you back 6.4p. Both include 0.7p for paper costs.
Conclusion
Overall, Brother MFC-J430w is not a bad choice for the money, especially as it comes with an ADF & print pages fast. Unfortunately, print quality is a tad lacking compared to the rivals. Text is not clean & there’s a lack of vibrancy to the colors on photos and graphics.
