Canon PIXMA MP620 belongs to one of the best-performing multifunction color inkjet printers available in the world for the price. This can print faster compared to competing models. Besides that, it also offers better-quality documents. While it has no fax feature, MP620 can connect to a network through Wi-Fi or Ethernet or via USB.
Design
Sadly, the front-panel controls belong to its weakness. A central job wheel is surrounded by arrow buttons. Besides that, a bunch of other buttons also fill out the control panel where some of which are dynamic function keys, requiring you to look at the 2.5” LCD display for seeing what they will do. Then, the end result is cluttered panel. Sometimes, the user interface is also confusing. In addition, the print head alignment process requires you to examine test prints & make judgments: most competing products automatically handle this step.
MP620 also comes with a separate inkjet print head & individual ink tank. The consumables cost less than competing designs significantly including the inkjets in the ink cartridges. Then, it comes with the standard ink tanks and a second, large-capacity black-ink tank.
Canon PIXMA MP620 also offers fax features or an ADF for the copier/scanner functions. Besides the 9-in-1 card reader, it also has a USB port on the front. However, you cannot print photos from a USB drive directly. However, you are allowed to scan documents & photos to a USB drive directly. Besides its Ethernet port, this printer also comes with built-in support for 802.11b/g wireless network connections.
Performance
MP620 is blazing fast. On a wireless connection, it averagely prints 5.9 ppm. For printing a 4×6 photo, it takes about 57 seconds. With USB connection, the result is also similar where it can print 5.8 ppm while printing a 4×6 photo takes 59 seconds. For scanning, 20 seconds per page is fast enough. For scanning, it takes 39 seconds per page.
Then, photo quality is above average. Color gradients are excellent. However, the colors don’t seem quite as saturated as on the HP prints. Anyway, HP printer is optimized for photos.
Conclusion
If you need a device to join the family computer to handle any print or photo task you may have, Canon PIXMA MP620 offers an excellent combination of quality, performance & features. This is not a perfect printer but $149 is a reasonable price for this all-in-one printer.
